Hiroyuki Shiratori has been about 40 years since I became an apprentice to my father. I am a skilled woodturner from Shizuoka, who has inherited traditional hand-turning techniques. I use a potter's wheel and wood lathe to carve out items, while interpreting the unique characteristics of each type of wood, such as zelkova, cherry, and cypress. I produce a variety of wooden items, from everyday tools like plates and sake cups, to wooden toys like tops and kendama, all of which convey the warmth of wood to the hands.
